Why are tutorials important?

Tutorials are often designed as smaller groups or classes that are led by a TA or graduate student. Tutorials are often not optional because they give you an opportunity to delve deeper into concepts, and attendance may contribute to your participation mark!

Tutorials are important for your learning because you can:
  • Ask your TA questions and get clarification
  • Work through exercises, discussion topics and concepts that will enhance your understanding of the lecture material
  • Solve problems in a team, develop your group skills, and get to know your peers better (which may come in handy when picking group members for group projects)
  • Prepare for and/or review midterms and exams
  • Clarify any concepts that you might not understand
  • Practice presentations (public speaking)
  • Learn to respectfully present counterarguments and cope with conflict/constructive criticism
  • Take notes

Tips

Your TA is often the individual leading the tutorial, and is also the person likely marking your assignments and tests. Listen carefully to the terminology and word choice they use to convey ideas: reiterating their language or concepts in exams and assignments may demonstrate your listening and understanding!
