What if English is not my first language?

Improving your English skills will help you understand your coursework better, read effectively, participate in class, share your thoughts, write clearly, avoid academic offences and add your personal voice to assignments.

You can take advantage of these resources to help you improve your English communication skills:

  • Arts and Science Resources:

    The Arts and Science website has documents with tips on academic reading, effective listening and effective writing.

  • English Language Learning Program:

    The Arts and Science English Language Learning Program (ELL) offers non-credit courses and workshops.

  • Communication Café:

    If you want to participate in group discussions on various topics to improve your English and public speaking skills, drop by the Communication Café.

  • English Language Program:

    The English Language Program offered by the School of Continuing Studies is an in-depth course-based program that spans approximately 12 weeks.

  • CIE Language Exchange:

    The CIE Language Exchange is open to all U of T students. In this program, you will get matched with an English-speaking student to help you converse in English.

  • Writing Advice:

    The Writing Centre has some online resources available with Writing Advice.
