Sidney Smith Commons Assistant
As part of the Student Success Programs team, Faculty of Arts & Science, the Sidney Smith Commons Assistants will work under the supervision of the Student Success Programs Officer and the Associate Director, Student Success, to provide peer support through the Sidney Smith Commons using a customer service excellence approach. This will include assisting students in person and online with academic wayfinding, assisting with space use, space booking and lobby table booking. In addition, Commons Assistants will support the delivery of programs, events, and academic opportunities to support the success of Arts & Science students. Students will also serve as A&S ambassadors within the Faculty and will represent the Faculty and the University of Toronto at on and off-campus recruitment events and activities throughout the year.
Sidney Smith Commons Assistants will be responsible for:
- Assisting with online and in-person academic wayfinding to provide students with accurate and helpful information, referrals, and support.
- Providing peer support in-person and virtually, including through email, live chat and webinars.
- Assisting in the development and updating of online communication and social media content.
- Assisting in creating a supportive, positive community where students can engage in academic pursuits.
- Supporting Sidney Smith Commons events and programming offered by the Student Success Programs Team.
- Managing the space booking and daily turn-over of bookable spaces in the Sidney Smith Commons.
- Supporting Sidney Smith Commons assessment and evaluation efforts.
- Employing IT troubleshooting when needed in the Sidney Smith Commons.
- General organization of the Sidney Smith Commons, including documenting any damage that occurs in the space.
- Supporting on and off-campus recruitment events and activities including Ontario University Fair and Fall Campus Day (Dates TBA).
- Adhering to confidentiality policies and University policies.
- Reporting any issues of importance or concern with the Student Success Programs Team.
Note: The university is based in Toronto and constituted according to Ontario law; therefore, it is our expectation that the provision of services to the university will be conducted in Ontario.
Qualifications
- A familiarity with the Arts & Science community and resources at the University of Toronto
- Experience engaging in Sidney Smith Commons Programs, an asset
- Strong verbal and written communication, listening, and conflict resolution skills
- Experience in program delivery and/or small group facilitation
- Experience with various social media platforms, particularly Instagram
- Strong ability to reflect on, and communicate about, student experiences
- Good attention to detail
- Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team
- Strong understanding of Equity, Diversity & Inclusion practices and experience working with diverse populations
- Knowledge of customer service principles; experience in customer service, an asset
- Good academic standing (minimum Cumulative GPA of 1.50)
- A current undergraduate student in the Faculty of Arts & Science, St. George
- Must be enrolled in at least 2.0 FCE (full course equivalent); minimum 0.5 credits in one session and 1.5 credits in the other.
- Must continue to meet the eligibility course load for the duration of the contract.
The Commons Assistant position requires 10 – 15 hours of scheduled work per week, including regular evening shifts (5 pm – 8 pm) and periodic weekend shifts. Work shifts are typically scheduled between 9 am and 8 pm Monday to Thursday and between 9 am and 5 pm on Friday.
Rate of pay: $19.00/hour

Senior Sidney Smith Commons Assistant

Recognized Study Group (RSG) Assistant
As part of the Student Success Programs team in the Faculty of Arts & Science (A&S), Recognized Study Group (RSG) Study Group Assistants will work under the supervision of the Student Success Programs Officer to support the RSG program, as well as assist with the delivery of other programs, events, and academic opportunities to support the success of Arts & Science students. RSG Study Group Assistants will be trained in group facilitation techniques, collaborative learning techniques and academic skill-building strategies to support the success of RSGs and RSG Leaders. Group Assistants will help with RSG program promotion, training of volunteer RSG Leaders and overall program support.

- Providing peer support and/or assisting with the facilitation of workshops to support A&S students.
- Supporting on-going communication to program participants and leaders.
- Assisting in creating a supportive, positive community space where students can engage in academic pursuits.
- Creating content for RSG promotions and communication efforts.
- Liaising with A&S student organizations, including departmental student associations & clubs.
- Adhering to confidentiality policies and University policies.
- Reporting any issues of importance or concern regarding the RSG program with the Student Success Programs Team.
- Supporting Sidney Smith Commons events and programming offered by the Student Success Programs Team, as needed.

Group Assistants will be scheduled to work approximately 6-10 hours per week, including team meetings, up to a maximum of 200 hours over the fall 2025 and winter 2026 terms. This position will be part of the University of Toronto work study program (subject to approval). Please note, students are only eligible to hold one work study position during the 2025-2026 academic year.
This position requires regular evening shifts and periodic weekend shifts. Work shifts are typically scheduled between 9 am and 7:30 pm Monday to Thursday and between 9 am and 5 pm on Friday.

Senior Recognized Study Groups (RSG) Assistant
As part of the Student Success Programs team in the Faculty of Arts & Science (A&S), Senior Study Group Assistants will work under the supervision of the Student Success Programs Officer and the Associate Director, Student Success to support the Recognized Study Group (RSG) program and the Study Group Assistant student-staff team in the Sidney Smith Commons. The RSG program supports A&S students in forming small, student-led study groups and providing valuable tools to support their academic success. Senior Groups Assistants will support the development, delivery, and assessment of the Recognized Study Group Program, as well as assist with the delivery of other programs, events, and academic opportunities to support the success of Arts & Science students.
Senior Study Group Assistants are responsible for:
- Supporting the daily tasks and development of the Study Groups Assistants
- Conducting one on one meetings with Study Group Assistants
- Build strong, trusting relationships to support the overall positive team culture
- Manage the Study Group Assistant staff with scheduling and administrative tasks
- Supporting the administration of the Registered Study Group program
- Organizing and monitoring the email inquiries in the RSG and Senior RSG email accounts ensuring inquiries are distributed to appropriate people
- Supporting the oversight of communication to RSG participants and Group Assistants to ensure all are aware of important deadlines including CCR and program requirements
- Supporting the oversight of RSG registration and group formation processes administered through the Arts & Science Online Services website and Quercus
- Maintaining and managing multiple information records
- Supporting RSG Leader Training and one-to one administration
- Reporting any issues of importance of concern regarding the RSG program with the Student Success Programs Team
- Assisting in the facilitation and training of RSG leaders
