How do I find a summer job?

The summer months are a great time to explore new opportunities, gain some valuable work experience, and, of course, earn some money to help pay for next year. Try these tips to find your ideal summer job.

  • Be prepared! Participate in workshops for help with your resume, cover letter and interview prep.
  • Do your research. Network at career fairs and get to know the opportunities available to you.
  • Expand your search. Satisfy your travel bug and earn some money by working abroad.
  • Look local. Find work on campus through the Work Study program and research summer job fairs and opportunities through the City of Toronto. You can also check out summer jobs and entrepreneurial support for students through the Province of Ontario.
  • Ask for help. Visit the Career Centre for:
    • Self-assessments
    • Entrepreneurial opportunities
    • Assistance with proper work permits and planning ahead (international students or those travelling abroad)
    • Search and job boards
    • Resume, cover letter and interview help

Tips

  • Start applying for summer jobs months before you hope to start. The interview/hiring process can often take months.
  • Look for “seasonal” opportunities. Many businesses and organizations hire more staff during their summer “busy seasons.”
  • Know what your ideal work environment is, and what skills you want to develop.
